Our Vision

As an integral part of Oldham School Improvement Service, in collaboration with other agencies, and working in a variety of educational contexts both within and beyond Oldham, we are committed to:

  • enabling equality of access and opportunity for all learners in BME groups at all stages and phases of their education;
  • promoting sustained school improvement to ensure the maximum attainment for all BME learners;
  • closing the attainment gap between BME learners and the best-performing learners nationally;
  • building the capacity of staff to realise the potential of BME learners;
  • collaborating with parents, carers and the wider community to maximise achievement and attainment.

Who we are

Whilst the vision expressed above guides the work of all consultants within the School Improvement Team, we can be seen as a specialist team within a broader provision of school improvement support.

We:

  • are a team of widely experienced professionals operating as advisers, consultants, qualified teachers and trainers with experience and expertise in language acquisition, bilingualism and academic and social development through all key stages;
  • possess experience in pedagogical and professional development in language acquisition, whole school policy development and capacity building;
  • offer support for schools working with minority groups including our most vulnerable groups;
  • can provide support in addressing all aspects of the Race Equalities and Community Cohesion agenda.

Our work

  • closing the attainment gap against local and national indicators;
  • supporting delivery of the Children and Young People’s Plan (CYPP) to promote the five outcomes of Every Child Matters;
  • building capacity in schools to meet the additional needs and raise the attainment of BME learners;
  • providing initial individual support to newly arrived BME learners;
  • promoting and supporting schools in working towards equality of outcomes;
  • disseminating and supporting effective practice promoting Race Equality and Community Cohesion;
  • monitoring and enabling schools to make effective use of targeted resources such as EMAG
    building school capacity to enable new arrivals to succeed in the English educational system;
  • supporting schools in providing innovative resources for teaching and learning which raise the attainment of BME learners;
  • supporting schools in maximising parental and community engagement to raise attainment of BME groups.

We offer

  • support and challenge for all EMAG-funded schools;
  • specialist advice and bespoke support based on best practice in EMA to all schools, academies and other settings as part of a Traded Service;
  • advice, training and guidance on promoting Community Cohesion, Race Equality and meeting statutory duty under legislation;
  • building and supporting the capacity of professionals in all schools, academies and other settings to raise the attainment of BME learners;

What we do

We:

  • facilitate, promote and support school-to-school collaboration;
  • provide networking opportunities as a means of sharing best practice;
  • enable national EMA objectives to be realised within the Oldham context;
  • support leadership and management teams in our schools, academies and other settings through the process of self-evaluation;
  • work in schools, academies and other settings to explore more effective ways to raise attainment and promote achievement;
  • support the development of policies and action plans that promote inclusive practice for all children, young people and their families, schools and services;
  • work with LA officers, schools, academies and other settings to support them in their statutory duties under equality legislation;
  • endeavour to increase the capacity of all partners to promote equality of outcome for minority ethnic and traveller children, young people and their families and carers;
  • support the outcomes of reviews or audits conducted to promote equality legislation;
  • provide a peripatetic teaching service to support New Arrivals;
  • train, support and develop professionals to meet identified EAL needs including those of advanced bilingual learners;
  • develop programmes of stage-specific and academic language to raise attainment;
