Support is available for all pupils for whom English is not the language of home, both those newly arrived in this country and those born here. This could include children of asylum seekers, refugees and European migrants enrolled in school and other ethnic minority pupils experiencing difficulty as a result of their language background. We also provide support to schools enrolling pupils with English as an Additional Language (EAL).
Support may take the form of:
-
Support for the enrolment and induction of EAL pupils into school;
-
Advice and support for school staff with materials and strategies for working with EAL pupils;
-
Additional teaching support, where appropriate;
-
Support for schools and families in maintaining pupils’ attendance;
-
Training and advice about relevant aspects of other cultures and religions.
Anyone can refer a child or young person by contacting the Team Co-ordinator by phone, fax or e-mail. Where a member of the EAL Team visits a school regularly new children can be referred to them directly. All children and young people referred to the Team will have an initial assessment of their learning needs leading to a package of support where appropriate.
